Ready to tackle all aspects of groundskeeping, from routine maintenance to landscape improvements? The Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking a motivated and experienced Senior Grounds Keeper to lead efforts in maintaining and enhancing our outdoor spaces in the Waimanalo/Kaneohe areas. This full-time, permanent position involves supervising and participating in the care of lawn and landscape areas, as well as the beautification of parks, playgrounds, and facilities.

What You'll Do

  • Supervise and participate in maintenance work, including trimming, mowing, watering, cleaning grounds and facilities (like drinking fountains), and performing general upkeep on playcourts, playground equipment, and recreation buildings.
  • Operate vehicles up to a ¾-ton pickup and do required driver maintenance to transport trash, supplies, equipment, and staff to different locations, and use a trailer when needed to haul equipment and supplies.
  • Supervise and help maintain outdoor areas including unmanned parks, parking lots, mini parks, right-of-ways, roadways, and traffic-calming areas; check contractor-maintained areas and report their condition; and supervise a small crew of community-service workers and grounds-maintenance staff.
  • Train and instruct staff on trimming, mowing, watering, cleaning grounds, and building maintenance; teach proper use, care, and maintenance of tools and equipment; and enforce and demonstrate safety practices for a safe work environment.
  • Inspect facilities, grounds, and equipment for damage or vandalism and report to a supervisor; prepare reports and requests for repairs and maintenance; and maintain, manage, and post daily work schedules.
  • Review and manage park usage requests for picnics and other activities, and report any damage or misuse of facilities by user groups to the Park Grounds Maintenance Superintendent.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Special Work Requirements

  • Work schedule is from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with varying days off.
  • May be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Will serve as a Disaster Response Worker during declared emergencies.

Experience Requirement

Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to show competence in the care and maintenance of grounds and landscaped areas.

Must Be Able To

  • Care for and grow shrubs, flowers, trees, and lawns.
  • Use and maintain grounds maintenance tools and equipment.
  • Plan, assign, and supervise the work of others.
  • Give and follow clear oral and written instructions.
  • Operate hand and power tools for grounds maintenance.
  • Take care of plants, trees, and turf properly.
  • Promote and enforce safe work practices.

License Requirement

  • Valid driver's license (Type 3), as required.
  • Obtain and maintain from City Health Services, Hearing Conservation Program (HCP) test, prior to appointment.
