Description:
The County of Los Angeles is seeking an Accountant II to join its workforce and perform a wide range of professional accounting functions. This role involves reviewing and completing accounting assignments throughout the annual cycle, maintaining financial records, preparing reports, and ensuring compliance with laws, regulations, and accounting standards. Candidates will also be expected to conduct cost analyses, participate in audits, and serve as a liaison with other departments and agencies on accounting matters.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform accounting tasks such as revenue and expenditure classifications, journalizing transactions, trial balances, and closing adjustments.
  • Interpret financial laws, regulations, and standards while recommending implementation steps.
  • Conduct cost surveys, revenue analysis, and procedural studies; prepare reports on findings.
  • Compile and reconcile complex operating statements, project accounts, and reimbursement claims.
  • Prepare balance sheets, revenue statements, fund balances, cost reports, and financial estimates.
  • Perform audits of nonprofit organizations, contractors, government agencies, and grant-funded entities; issue audit reports with recommendations.
  • Support external and internal audits by preparing work papers and documentation.
  • Analyze cost accounting systems for reliability and propose improvements.
  • Supervise small accounting support staff and serve as an Internal Control Certification Program (ICCP) coordinator as needed.

Requirements to Qualify:

  • Completion of at least 21 semester or 32 quarter units in accounting, including two advanced accounting courses.
  • Option I: One year of entry-level accounting/auditing at Accountant I level.
  • Option II: Two years of technical accounting experience at Accounting Technician II level.
  • Official transcripts must be submitted at the time of filing or within seven days of application.

Other Requirements:

  • Valid California Class C driver’s license or alternative transportation method.
  • Physical Class II (Light) – may involve light lifting up to 10 lbs. and considerable ambulation.

Assessment Process:
Qualified applicants will be invited to a multiple-choice and/or simulation assessment weighted 100%, testing areas such as professional potential, achievement, numerical reasoning, adaptability, responsibility, and Microsoft Excel 365 skills. Candidates must score at least 70% to be placed on the eligible register, valid for 12 months.
